I finally got a guy to admit he cuts his own hair after three years of him lying about it

Last week, a regular came in for his usual trim and his line was all wrong, like he'd taken clippers to it himself. I asked him straight up if he'd touched it, and he just said 'nope.' I remembered his first cut with me three years ago was a mess, and he told me his 'old barber' did it. After he left, I checked my old photos. The messed-up line from back then was the exact same as the one he had last week. So I called him, told him I had the proof, and he finally said he's been doing it himself for years to save money. Has anyone else had a client who just would not admit to a home haircut?

Man, I always thought people were just bad at lying about that stuff.

Oh totally! I had the same problem for ages. What finally worked for me was just practicing the story out loud a few times before I needed it.

Three times is my rule. I'll run through a story three times out loud, even if it feels stupid talking to my bathroom mirror. Mason's right that practice helps, but you need to do it enough that the details stick without sounding like a script. Wade558 has a point that some people are just bad, but most folks get caught because they forget their own made up facts. The real trick is making the fake details simple and boring so they're easy to remember. If you make up something wild, you'll trip yourself up every time.
