The great basil avalanche of Tuesday afternoon

I was on my third floor balcony in Chicago, trying to move a heavy ceramic pot of basil to get more sun. The pot slipped from my wet hands, hit the railing, and dumped about three pounds of soil and a full plant onto my downstairs neighbor's patio furniture below. I had to go down, explain, and help clean it up. Has anyone found a good method for moving big pots without this kind of disaster?

Man, that "pot slipped from my wet hands" part is the key. Water is like grease on ceramic. I always dry my hands completely on my pants before I grab anything heavy and smooth. But even then, for a big pot on a balcony, you need a plan. I'd get one of those little furniture mover disks, the flat plastic ones. Slide it under the pot first. Then you're not lifting, you're just pushing. Saves your back and your neighbor's patio set.

Good call on the furniture sliders, @wyatt_green. Those things are a lifesaver. I learned the hard way moving a big planter last year. Put a towel down first for extra grip if the balcony floor is rough concrete. Makes the slide way smoother. Almost dropped the whole thing trying to lift it wet-handed like an idiot.
