Just realized something about plant spacing after seeing a neighbor's setup in Chicago

My neighbor on the 4th floor has all his pots pushed right to the balcony edge, which gives his tomatoes way more light and lets him fit three extra containers in the same space, so has anyone tried this with a south-facing balcony?

Wow, that's a serious lightbulb moment. I always kept my pots back a foot, thinking it looked tidier and was safer for the plants. But my peppers on a west-facing balcony were always a bit leggy. After seeing a setup like that last summer, I pushed everything to the rail. The difference was huge. They got hours more direct sun, and the stems got way stronger. Totally changed how I use my space now.

Yeah, and the wind factor gets ignored. Putting pots right at the rail like that, they get a constant breeze. It strengthens the stems way more than just sun alone. Acts like a natural workout for them. My tomatoes got way sturdier after I tried it, stopped flopping over in summer storms.

Ever think about what's under the pots? My old place had a metal balcony floor that got crazy hot, so I had to use those little pot feet to keep the roots from cooking.
