I had to choose between a big tomato plant or three smaller pepper plants for my tiny south-facing balcony last spring. Went with the peppers and got a full harvest.

Nice! I did the same with herbs last year, way better for a small space.

fisher.diana nailed it with the herbs thing. I did a similar move one year when I only had a little patio space, swapped out a big tomato for a few cucumber plants. They took up way less room and I got like 30 cukes off two plants. Plus, you can train them up a trellis so they don't spread all over the place. That balcony harvest must've felt great, nothing beats picking your own food right outside your door.
