Discovered that bottom watering beats top watering for my basil plants

I was getting yellow leaves on my balcony basil after 3 weeks, so I tried filling the tray instead of pouring from above, and now the soil stays moist without fungus gnats. For anyone else with limited space, have you found bottom watering works better for your herbs or does it just depend on the pot size?

Bottom watering beats top watering" for basil? Nah, that's backwards. I tried bottom watering once and my basil got all leggy and weird. Top watering is way better because you can actually see when the soil is dry on top and you know it's time to water again. With bottom watering you're just guessing if the roots are getting enough water or not. Plus top watering washes away all the dust and stuff that builds up on the leaves, keeps them cleaner for photosynthesis. Honestly sounds like you just had bad luck with your first batch, not a system problem.
