TIL a five gallon bucket with holes is the best chick feeder I've ever used

My chicks were wasting so much feed by scratching it out of the standard metal feeder. I saw a video from a farm in Ohio where they used a bucket. I drilled a ring of 1-inch holes about 3 inches up from the bottom of a bucket and filled it with crumbles. It holds a full 25 pound bag, they can't roost on it, and the waste is almost zero. Has anyone else found a simple household item that solved a big chicken problem?

Saw a post on a gardening blog that said the same thing. They called it a cheap fix for a pricey problem. Birds and squirrels just slide right off the smooth sides. Makes total sense now that I see it. My feeder was getting emptied in a day before. Going to try the bucket idea this weekend for sure.

Found the same thing with a cheap plastic storage bin. Cut a few access holes in the sides and it stopped all the scratching and perching. That bucket trick is a total game changer for keeping the feed in the feeder.
