My old hen stopped laying, and I'm stuck in an ethical bind.

I'm not sure if it's right to keep her or cull her, so how have you dealt with this?

Saw my friend deal with this exact thing. Her hen, Mabel, stopped laying at six years old, but she kept her as a garden pet for two more years. It's like what @richardfox said about the bond making it hard. She just fed her scraps and let her roam until she passed naturally.

Ugh, welcome to the world's worst retirement plan.

Understand completely, that's a really tough spot to be in. She's still a living animal you've cared for, so the bond makes it hard. Only you can make that call for your flock.
