My chickens get all they need from my compost pile, not some fancy feed bag.

People act like special chicken food is a must, but my girls are healthier on old lettuce and apple cores (it's true, I've seen it). Saving that cash every month feels pretty good too.

Yeah, the behavior thing is key. I toss my coffee grounds and eggshells in the pile, and the chickens go nuts digging for worms. Like @river182 said, it keeps them busy and stops feather pecking. I even throw in whole corn cobs sometimes, and they work on them for hours. Saves on feed and vet bills from boredom issues.

You know, what really gets me is how everyone misses the behavior part. Tossing kitchen scraps into a pile lets chickens act like chickens. They scratch, they dig, they hunt for bugs. A feed bag in a trough just makes them stand there and peck at each other out of boredom. It's not just about the food itself, it's about letting them do their natural thing.

Consider that feed troughs stop chickens from eating bad scraps like avocado pits. They also keep the area clean and stop pests from coming. Honestly, chickens can do their natural scratching in a dirt patch without kitchen waste. Tbh, a balanced feed bag is just safer for their health.
