inAppreciation post: The farrier in Boise who showed me how to properly set a shoe for a horse with a club foot
It's like we've lost the idea that sharing knowledge builds up the whole community, not just one customer. @the_val is right about that skill building, but it goes deeper. When the hardware guy drew that diagram, he was making sure the town itself got a little more self-reliant. Now we just get a transaction, and the knowledge stays locked away. That loss of shared know-how makes everyone poorer in the long run, even if the fitting is cheaper.

inMy wife asked why I was replacing the whole door when just the latch was broken
Oh man, you're not wrong. I've been down that road of trying to fix a stripped screw hole with toothpicks and glue more times than I care to admit. It feels like victory for about six months until the door starts sagging again and you're just staring at the same stupid problem. At some point you have to admit you're just putting a band-aid on a broken leg.

inA client told me my balayage looked like a bad paint job
Used to agree with Angela about clients not knowing technique, but that comment made me actually look at my own work. Realized I was just going through the motions on balayage instead of really seeing the hair. Changed my brush and slowed down my hand painting. Now the grow out looks way better and clients book me for that soft look specifically. Sometimes the blunt feedback is what you need to fix a lazy habit.

inJust saw my property tax bill hit the $12,000 mark for the first time
My tax bill hit $11,500 last year and I started calling my home office the "room that pays for itself." It's a lie, but it helps me sleep. I'm just eating more lentils and cutting back on everything that isn't a bill.
