Thinking back on shared meals during overnight avionics work

When I first worked on avionics, our team often ate together from packed lunches in the break room. We would bring simple things like stew or pie to share on long shifts. It was a nice way to talk and relax between jobs. Now, with faster schedules, most folks grab quick bites alone from machines or order out. I miss those shared moments that made hard work feel lighter. Maybe we could start a monthly potluck to bring some of that back. It might help new techs feel more part of the group.

Schedule that potluck and make it a real event, not just another meeting. Pick a theme each month, like slow cooker meals or everyone's favorite childhood comfort food. Have a sign up sheet so you get a good mix of mains, sides, and desserts instead of six bags of chips. Those shared meals let senior guys pass on shop tips to the new kids in a way the manual never could. It builds a real team feeling that just makes the long nights easier to handle.

But what happens when the sign-up sheet gets ignored? We tried this at my shop and it became a mess. Someone always forgets, so you end up with three desserts and no real food. The themes sound fun but force people to cook stuff they might not know how to make. Last time we did "comfort food" I saw two people just bring store-bought rotisserie chicken. The old guys still ate alone in the corner talking shop, so nothing really changed.

Three celiac techs here always skip potlucks due to cross-contamination fears.
