I read in a trade magazine that the average car today has over 3,000 feet of wiring. That's more than half a mile of wire in a single vehicle. How is that even possible?

That 3,000 feet number makes total sense when you think about all the fancy stuff in modern cars. My buddy's 2022 F-150 has heated and cooled seats, a 360 degree camera system, lane keeping sensors in the mirrors, and a giant touchscreen that basically runs the whole dashboard. Each one of those systems has its own wiring harness running from the front to the back of the truck. Plus there's all the wiring for the power windows, door locks, the automatic tailgate, and the trailer brake controller that's prewired from the factory. It adds up fast when you're running separate wires for power, ground, and data signals for every single feature.

My old truck probably has about 50 feet of wire.

50 feet of wire is nothing, my old farm truck had a whole birds nest under the dash that probably doubled that.
