Blew a CV joint in the middle of northern Wisconsin last winter

Was out on a frozen logging trail near Rhinelander. My 2015 Polaris started making this grinding noise. Then a loud pop. Couldn't even move it 10 feet. Took me 4 hours to get a buddy with a truck to haul it back to the garage. Had to replace the whole axle myself in single digit temps. Anyone else have a drivetrain fail when you were miles from pavement?

Four hours in single digit temps sounds like a vacation compared to fixing a CV joint on a frozen lake. Your buddy must be a real saint for hauling you out, or you owe him a whole lot of beer. At least your next trip will have a backup plan, right?

Used to think a tow strap and a prayer was enough prep for winter trips, but that frozen lake story definitely changed my mind on that. What's the one tool you'd never leave home without now?
