That time I sifted dirt through a colander in my backyard looking for arrowheads like a total amateur

I used to just walk around fields hoping to spot something cool, but after watching a real dig in New Mexico last spring, I realized I was basically doing archaeology like a kid hunting for Easter eggs, and now I actually grid off sections and use proper screens, but has anyone else had a neighbor call the cops on them for 'digging a grave' in their own yard?

Wait, aren't you supposed to get permission before digging on your own land?

Respectfully, I see it a bit different. On your own property, you usually own the rights to what's under it (unless you're in some weird HOA or have mineral rights issues). You don't need permission to dig a hole for a fence post or plant a tree. It's your land, your dirt. Now if you're digging up something that belongs to the city like a water line or gas pipe, yeah that's different and you'd probably need their okay. But just digging for a personal project? Pretty sure that's your call. Most of the time the only thing you're gonna hit is a rock, not buried treasure (unfortunately).
