Hot take: The worst week of my career was digging in a flooded trench in Norfolk.
We had a permit for just seven days to check a site before a new road went in. It rained hard for three days straight, turning our 2 meter deep trench into a muddy soup pit. Every bucket we pulled up was half water, half clay, and we lost a whole day just trying to pump it out. I remember my supervisor saying, 'If we don't find something by Friday, this whole dig is a wash,' and the pressure was awful. We finally hit a piece of Roman pottery on the last afternoon, but it was so waterlogged it started to crumble in my hand. We barely saved any of it. Has anyone else had a dig where the weather just ruined everything you were trying to do?
