A simple trick for dealing with a stuck wedge on a back leaner
Had a nasty back leaner on a maple removal in Cincinnati last week, and my usual wedges just kept popping out after the face cut. On a whim, I grabbed a small piece of a broken branch, about the size of my thumb, and tapped it into the kerf behind the wedge. That little chunk of wood acted like a shim and kept the wedge from backing out under the pressure. The tree went right over on the hinge. Has anyone else found a good use for random wood scraps like that?

Saw my buddy do something similar with a chunk of pine bark once. Wedge was walking out on a nasty oak and that bark just locked it in place.

Have you tried this trick with a beveled wedge instead of a straight shim? On stubborn back leaners I always carry a couple wedges with a slight angle filed on the face, they grip the kerf way better than standard ones. That branch trick sounds like a solid field fix though, sometimes you just gotta work with what's laying around.
