A client in Asheville pointed out my climbing line was frayed after a big oak removal.

I used to think I could judge a line's life by feel, but seeing that core through his eyes made me start a strict 6-month inspection log, so what's your hard rule for retiring gear?

My buddy's harness strap just gave out mid-climb, so now I retire anything with a weird bend or fade.

Man, that's a wake-up call. I read a study once that said UV damage weakens fibers way before you can see it, so I put tape over my gear labels to track sun exposure time. After what happened to @fiona502's buddy, I won't even trust a faded color anymore. You think that's overkill?
