That seasoned repair tech told me to skip the thermal paste on a fridge compressor and I almost lost the whole unit
Guy I sub for sometimes said paste was overkill for sealed systems and just use the gasket it came with. Three weeks later the compressor started cycling hot and I had to pull it all apart again. Anyone else run into bad advice from the old guard that cost you time?

...and that's exactly the kind of advice that sounds smart in theory but blows up in practice. I had an old timer tell me to use plain old rubber cement on a compressor gasket once, said it was the same stuff they used in the 80s. Two months later it was leaking oil everywhere and I had to pull the whole system apart again. Learned real quick that those old "shortcuts" usually just make more work down the road.

Did a buddy try something similar on his truck and end up with a gooey mess that ruined his whole alternator?
