Helped a lady save her 15 year old fridge and she cried

Last month I got a call from a woman in Raleigh whose fridge was making a loud clicking noise. She was about to drop $1,200 on a new one because three different repair guys told her the compressor was shot. I went over, listened for 2 minutes, and found the start relay was just loose. I popped it back in, tightened the connection, and charged her $75 for the service call. She actually started tearing up and said I was the first person who didnt try to upsell her. That moment stuck with me because it reminded me why I went independent in the first place. Has anyone else run into a simple fix that other techs completely overlooked?

Hold on, start relays don't usually pop loose on their own after 15 years. Are you sure it wasn't the overload protector that needed to be cleaned?

Nah man you might be right honestly, I been wrenching on these things since the 90s and I've seen more overload protectors cause phantom issues than anything. Those little buggers get crusty and just won't reset right, making you think the relay shot out or something. Before you buy any parts, take a pencil eraser and clean those contacts on the overload protector real good, that's saved me a bunch of times. Also check that little bimetal strip isn't all pitted or burned, if it is then yeah swap the whole protector.
