Update: I started sorting my watchlist by the number of active forum threads instead of just ratings.
After getting burned by a highly-rated show with zero discussion potential, I now check the 'General Anime' subforum on AniList for at least 3 active threads before starting anything new, which has led to way better post-viewing chats.

Honestly, checking the active threads is basically my only smart move on here. Tbh, I mostly just lurk until I see a topic where I've already made all the mistakes so I can warn people. It's like my superpower, but for being wrong. I probably refresh that page way too much just to avoid jumping into a dead conversation. Feels a bit pathetic when I type it out.
