I used to think the 'best girl' debates were just dumb fun
I was at a small con in Austin last year, arguing with a guy at a panel about why Asuka from Evangelion was overrated. He listened, then said, 'You're not arguing about who she is, you're arguing about who you needed her to be.' That one line stuck with me for months. I went back and rewatched the series, and he was totally right. I was just mad she wasn't the perfect tsundere trope I wanted. Has anyone else had a single comment completely reframe how you see a character?

My buddy had this thing for a side character in a show, got mad when they made a dumb choice. Someone online said "you're just upset they're not your self insert anymore" and it totally broke his brain. He had to go touch grass for a week.

Yeah, I used to get so annoyed at how Shinji acted in Evangelion. Then I saw someone say he wasn't weak, he was just a scared kid who never got to be a kid. That flipped a switch for me, made me see his whole "I mustn't run away" thing as way braver than I gave him credit for.
