My 2007 HP printer finally kicked the bucket yesterday after I tried to print a label.
It started smoking out of the side and just died on me. Has anyone had luck reviving an old laser printer with a capacitor swap or is it time to just haul it to the recycler?

Three years ago my HP 2055 did the exact same thing with the smoke. I cracked it open expecting to find a blown capacitor but it was actually the fuser film that had melted and shorted something out. If you are handy with a soldering iron you could try replacing the power supply caps, but HP uses a lot of custom parts that are hard to find. Honestly for a 2007 model the cost of caps and your time is probably more than a used replacement on Craigslist. I'd just say goodbye and haul it to the recycler before it stinks up your whole garage.

Drop the paper tray and pull the fuser assembly out first. That's where the meltdown happens on these models, its a known weak spot. If the film has torn or melted through, you will see black goo or char marks on the rollers. Check the thermistor too, if that's dead the whole thing overheats and then you get smoke. Honestly unless you have a donor printer sitting around for parts, its not worth the headache. Scrap it and grab a used 2055dn off Facebook for fifty bucks, they are a dime a dozen and work fine.

Right? Same thing happened to my 2055. That burning plastic smell is unmistakable.
