My panel started beeping in a finished basement and I almost lost my mind

I was finishing up a job in a split-level house in Springfield last Tuesday, just connecting the last motion sensor. Suddenly the main panel started this loud, steady beep from the utility closet. The homeowner started to panic, and I couldn't find any trouble codes in the manual. I ended up tracing every single wire for about an hour and found a tiny piece of metal shaving had fallen into the backup battery compartment, shorting two terminals. Has anyone else had a random conductive bit cause a false alarm like that? What's the weirdest thing you've found causing a fault?

How do you even begin to explain that to the homeowner? "Yeah, your house is haunted by a tiny robot ghost." Just a wild fluke that would drive anyone up the wall.

A metal shaving? That's a new one.

Seriously though, how does that even happen? Like, what machine leaves behind a piece of itself?
