TIL I've been crowding my air fryer basket for months

I was making frozen french fries for my kids last night, the kind from the bag. I always just dumped the whole serving in, gave it a shake halfway, and thought the soggy middle pieces were just how they were. Then my wife, who was watching, said 'looks like you're steaming them in there.' That one comment made me stop and actually look. The fries were piled on top of each other, no space at all. I tried a test batch with just a single layer, maybe half the amount. The difference was crazy. They were all crispy, not just the ones on the edges. I've been basically ruining fries for six months by overloading it. How do you guys figure out the right amount for different foods? Is there a rule, or is it just trial and error?

Wait, you're telling me I shouldn't just cram the whole bag of chicken nuggets in there?

That "steaming them in there" line really hits home. I did the same thing with chicken wings until I saw how much better they cook in a single layer, and I bet @jesse_barnes37 will see a huge difference with nuggets too. It's a simple fix that makes everything come out so much better.
