Saw a weird air fryer hack at a friend's cookout in Phoenix that I'm not sure about

They were cooking frozen fries directly on the basket without any liner or oil, and the cleanup was a nightmare. Has anyone else run into a 'no-oil' tip that just made a huge mess?

Shake it? They probably just dumped the whole thing in the fryer.
