Tried to save money by painting my own kitchen cabinets...

I spent three weekends painting my kitchen cabinets with a $20 brush set from the hardware store, and now they look like a wavy mess up close because I didn't sand properly between coats. My neighbor walked in, took one look, and asked if my five-year-old helped with the project. Has anyone else had a DIY paint job turn into a total disaster, or am I just the only one who skipped the sanding step?
