Shoutout to the guy who told me my bench grinder was set up wrong

I was shaping a chisel at my bench grinder in the garage and a buddy stopped by. He watched for a minute and said, 'You're gonna burn that steel, your tool rest is way too far from the wheel.' I had it like three inches away because I thought it gave me more room. He showed me how to adjust it to an eighth of an inch gap, which keeps the metal cooler. I moved it right then and tried again. The difference was instant, no more blueing on the edge. Has anyone else had a basic tool setup they were doing wrong for years?

I saw a woodworking video last week that said the same thing about grinder tool rests. The guy stressed keeping it super close to prevent taking too much heat into the edge. It's one of those simple fixes you don't realize you need.

Actually, the heat thing is more about not dipping the steel in water too soon.
