Watching people skip the tack cloth step makes me cringe every time
I keep seeing folks at the local co-op workshop go straight from sanding to applying finish, and the dust nibs are always obvious. A quick wipe with a 3M tack cloth after 220-grit sanding makes a HUGE difference in the final smoothness. Am I the only one who thinks this is a non-negotiable step?

Seriously, it's like finishing with sand in your sandwich.

I mean, I learned the hard way on a cherry tabletop last year. Sanded it down to 320 grit, thought it looked clean, and ended up with this dusty, rough finish. Now I keep a pack of those blue shop towels and mineral spirits next to my sander. A quick wipe down shows you every single speck you missed, it's kind of shocking. Skipping that step just adds so much extra work fixing the finish later.

My oak desk last month proved you right, that mineral spirits trick is a lifesaver.
