My foreman told me to always pre-heat my ladle for at least 15 minutes before a pour, and it finally clicked after a bad cold shut on a big gearbox job.

I skipped the full pre-heat one morning because we were behind, and the resulting defect cost us two days of rework, so what's your non-negotiable prep step that seems simple but is actually critical?

Wait you skipped the pre-heat on a gearbox pour? That's a huge piece, man, I can't believe you risked it. That rule is written in blood for a reason, cold shuts are a nightmare. My non-negotiable is always checking my mold seals twice, even when they look perfect. Saw a guy lose a whole flask to a run-out once because he got in a hurry.

Yeah, "written in blood" is right, but sometimes the rule itself can trick you. If you pre-heat too fast on a complex mold, you can bake in moisture and get steam explosions instead.
