Choosing between a new core box or fixing the old one for a big gear mold

Had a job for a 12-inch gear casting and the old wooden core box was cracked. Could have spent a day making a new one from scratch or trying to patch it with epoxy putty. Went with the patch, and it held for the full 50-piece run. Anyone ever had a repair like that work out better than expected?

Patched a core box once and it blew out on the third pour, ruined the whole batch. That epoxy putty can fail under heat and pressure when you least expect it. Spending the day to make a new box is annoying, but it's cheap insurance against scrapping expensive castings. A temporary fix can cost way more in the long run.

Glad the patch worked for you, but @the_amy is right about the risk. A new box is boring but stops a small job from turning into a big scrap problem. That extra day is just part of the job sometimes.
