Visited a flower farm in Oregon and noticed something strange
Went to a small flower farm outside Portland last weekend and almost every bucket of peonies had rubber bands tight around the stems. The farmer said she does it to keep them straight during transport but I swear it was bruising the stems. Has anyone else seen florists using rubber bands like that?

Oh wow that's interesting! My buddy works at a flower shop in Seattle and he told me they stopped using rubber bands on peonies because the latex can actually stain the stems and make them rot faster. He said they switched to those soft cloth strips instead and it made a huge difference for their deliveries.

Huh, no kidding! My friend runs a small delivery service downtown and he told me they had a whole shipment of tulips get ruined because the rubber bands left these gross brown marks on the stems. The flowers started drooping after like two days. He said the cloth strips are way better, plus they don't snap when you try to adjust the bunch. He also mentioned that rubber bands can get brittle in the heat of the delivery truck, which is a nightmare.
