My grandma swore by using a bit of sugar in the water for cut roses

She ran a flower shop in Omaha for 40 years and always told me a teaspoon of plain sugar per vase keeps them perky longer than any store-bought food. I tried it on a big wedding order of 50 red roses last weekend, and they looked fresh for almost 10 full days. Has anyone else tried this old trick, or did I just get lucky?

Read somewhere that sugar feeds the flowers like plant food would.
