I've been using a flathead screwdriver to pry open paint can lids for years, but my wife just asked why I don't use the actual pry bar notch on the handle of my 5-in-1 tool.

I was halfway through my third can of primer for the living room when she pointed at the little notch on the tool I had sitting right next to me, and I just stared at it for a solid minute.

That moment of staring at the tool is so real. I read a whole article once about how people get stuck in these "workflow ruts" with tools. The writer called it "tool blindness," where you use something one way for so long you stop seeing its other uses. Your brain just goes on autopilot, especially during a repetitive job like painting. It's not about being dumb, it's just how habits form. I bet half the people reading this have done the exact same thing with something in their garage.

Tool blindness sounds like an excuse for not paying attention. If you own a tool, you should know what it does. Calling it a "habit" just lets people off the hook for being lazy with their stuff. My grandpa taught me to respect tools by learning every use, and that mindset keeps you from getting stuck. Autopilot is a choice, not some unavoidable brain trap. People should try harder to see what's right in front of them.
