Finally got a clean clinch on that big Percheron mare

Had a real tough time with a Percheron mare over in Cloverdale last week, her hoof walls were thick as bricks. I switched from my usual hammer to a heavier 2.5 pound driving hammer for the clinching. The extra weight let me drive the nail point out in one solid hit instead of a bunch of taps. The clinch laid over flat and smooth on the first try, which never happens for me on a draft. Anyone have a different tool they like for really dense hoof walls?

Ever try a clinch cutter before you start? I had a Percheron gelding that would just fold my nails over. I started cutting a tiny groove where the clinch should sit, just with the tip of the cutter. It gives the nail point a place to go so it doesn't just mush into the wall. It's an extra step, but it saved me so much headache on the really dense ones.

That groove trick is a total game changer for tough feet.
