You ever notice how the best people in any trade are the ones who stop to actually teach you? A good farrier could just slap the shoe on and take your money, but the ones who show you the "why" behind the angle or the trim are building real skill. That's becoming way too rare.

That bit about the farrier showing the "why" is so true. Reminds me of the old guy who ran the hardware store in my hometown. He wouldn't just sell you a pipe fitting, he'd draw a diagram on a paper bag to show you how to fix the leak yourself. Now it's just a big box store where they point at an aisle and go back to their phone.

It's like we've lost the idea that sharing knowledge builds up the whole community, not just one customer. @the_val is right about that skill building, but it goes deeper. When the hardware guy drew that diagram, he was making sure the town itself got a little more self-reliant. Now we just get a transaction, and the knowledge stays locked away. That loss of shared know-how makes everyone poorer in the long run, even if the fitting is cheaper.
