Pro tip: I found out that buying "ugly" produce through a local farm subscription saves about 40% on my weekly veggie cost

Came across a study from the NRDC that said roughly 20% of fruits and veggies get tossed just for looking weird, so I signed up for a discounted box from a farm near Austin and honestly it's all perfectly good stuff, just lumpy peppers and curved cucumbers has anyone else tried one of those subscriptions and noticed a big price difference?

Wait, they actually throw away 20% of produce just because it looks funny? That seems insane to me. I mean, who cares if a pepper has a weird lump on it, it still tastes the same. I guess that explains why my grocery store charges double for the perfect ones that look like plastic toys. Good on you for saving money on those lumpy guys, honestly that's the smartest thing I've heard all week.

Oh man, you're absolutely right about the plastic toy comparison, that's spot on. It's honestly heartbreaking and wasteful how much perfectly good food gets tossed just because of a little bump or curve. I remember last year I got a bag of carrots that were all twisted and tangled up, looked like a pile of weird orange roots, but they were just as crisp and sweet as any straight one I've ever bought. The good news is more stores are starting to sell "ugly" produce at a discount, and I hope that catches on everywhere. Keep buying those lumpy peppers, I've been doing it for years and it's saved me a bundle.
