The $60 laser guide I bought off eBay was a waste of good money
I picked up a cheap laser guide for lining up elevator door tracks last month. Figured it would save time on the install at a 12-story building downtown. But the thing drifted out of level after just two uses and threw everything off by a quarter inch. Had to rip out the track and start over, cost me a whole afternoon on the job. Anyone else had trouble with those budget alignment tools?

Proves you get what you pay for, plain and simple.

Yeah "you get what you pay for" is pretty much the truth here. But honestly I gotta ask - did you check the calibration out of the box before you used it on that job? Ngl I've had cheap tools that were actually fine after a quick adjustment with a screwdriver or level check. I just wonder if the drifting was a factory defect or if the tool just couldn't hold up to being tossed around in a toolbox for a day. Some of those budget lasers are decent for light use but they definitely don't handle the abuse of a high-rise install.
