Warning: I keep seeing people skip the flux step on basic soldering jobs

Just fixed a friend's game console where the previous repair had cold joints all over the power board. He said the guy 'just used the iron and solder'. I told him you need flux every single time, even with rosin core. It's been six months of seeing this same mistake in local shops. Has anyone else noticed this getting worse lately?

Ugh, I see this all the time too... but I gotta say, you don't always need extra flux with a fresh rosin core solder on a clean joint. The core has flux in it. The real problem is people using old solder or a dirty iron, or trying to fix a bad joint without adding any. That's when you absolutely need the extra help. So many techs just don't clean their tips or re-tin them, and then the solder won't flow right no matter what.

Man, you just described my old self perfectly. I used to grab the flux paste for every single solder job, no question. Then I watched a guy fix a board with just a fresh solder roll and a spotless iron tip. The solder flowed like butter. It clicked for me that I was using extra flux to fight my own dirty tools. Now I clean my tip like it's a religion before I even start.
