Manager's DIY solder job sparked a break room evacuation
He was trying to fix a console board without proper gear. Next thing we know, the smoke detector is blaring! We still give him grief about it.

My neighbor Dave tried to fix his old radio with a soldering kit in his kitchen. He used some kind of acid flux that made the whole apartment smell like a chemical fire. The smoke detector went off and we had to evacuate the building at midnight. The fire department showed up and gave him a stern talk about ventilation. Now we joke that his repair cost more in embarrassment than a new radio would have. It's amazing how a simple fix can go so wrong.

Two weeks later and Dave's still getting jokes about that midnight evacuation. Classic case of the fix being way worse than the broken thing.

Wait, was he using rosin core solder or any flux? That stuff makes way more smoke than regular solder, especially without a fan. A lot of smoke detectors pick up on the chemical fumes super fast. If his iron was too hot, it would have burned the flux right away and filled the room.
