I had the worst reno week of my life after cheaping out on a $30 reciprocating saw blade to cut through a cast iron stack in my 1950s Edmonton bungalow.

It took me 6 hours and 3 broken blades to get through one pipe, has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way with old plumbing?

6 hours sounds rough but honestly I bet you could have made it work with some patience and a can of WD-40 lol.

Oh, you poor thing. That "cheaping out on a $30 reciprocating saw blade" line hit home for me. I tried the same thing on a cast iron toilet flange in my 1940s Saskatoon house, and after the second blade snapped and flew across the basement, I finally went and bought a proper carbide tipped blade for $40. The difference was night and day - I was through that pipe in under 10 minutes. It's amazing how much time and frustration a good blade saves you in the end.
