Heard a guy at the fuel dock say he runs his pump at 80% max RPM

I was grabbing diesel in Portland yesterday and overheard a captain talking to his deckhand. He said he never runs his pump wide open anymore, keeps it around 80% of the max RPM on the gauge. I always thought you had to push it hard to move material. Tried it this morning on a sand bar and the wear on the impeller looked way better after four hours. Anyone else run their pumps slower for longer life?

My pump probably thinks I'm a real jerk for running it flat out all the time.

Tried that myself last season. Pump lives longer, impellers last way longer. Running flat out just cooks the rubber faster. 80% is the sweet spot for most pumps. Still moves material fine. Just takes a few more minutes. Worth it for not changing impellers every month. Your pump will thank you.
