Used to just slap drywall mud on with a 6 inch knife and call it a day

For years I was happy with lumpy walls because I didn't know any better. Then I watched a guy at a Habitat for Humanity build in Phoenix use a 12 inch knife and box sander on a ceiling joint. My finish still isn't perfect but the texture is way smoother and I get done faster now. Anyone else upgrade their mudding tools and see a big difference?

Lumpy walls and didn't know better" - man that was me too, 100%. I always figured a little texture was just part of the deal until a buddy talked me into a 12 inch knife and I felt stupid for not trying it sooner.

Hold on, isn't that just trading one problem for another? I tried a 12 inch knife once and ended up with massive ridges every time I stopped to reload. My walls looked like a topographical map. I'd rather have a little orange peel texture than big obvious lines you can see from across the room. To each their own, but I'll take my lumpy imperfections over those speed bumps any day. You guys must have way more patience for sanding than I do.
