Rant: My custom front panel IO ports died after a week

I spent last Tuesday wiring up a new front panel with USB-C and audio jacks on my scratch build case. By Sunday the USB port stopped recognizing anything and the headphone jack crackles like a Geiger counter. I used a cheap 20 dollar breakout board from Amazon and I guess that was my mistake. Has anyone found a reliable source for these connectors that doesn't fall apart in days?

@julia843 absolutely nailed it with the "mystery meat" label. Those cheap breakout boards are basically a gamble where the house always wins. I dug into this a few months back after killing two boards in a row and found that the real issue is the USB controller chip on those boards - they use the cheapest one they can source, usually some no-name part that can't handle power draw or static discharge. Once you go to a board with a genuine Texas Instruments or Microchip controller (even from a decent Chinese brand like Waveshare or one of their compatible sellers), the difference is night and day. The audio jacks are the same story - cheap ones skip the shielding and use copper foil instead of a proper ground plane, which is why you get that awful crackle. I ended up paying about 45 bucks for a proper board from DigiKey and it's been solid for six months now.

Honestly, sounds like you bought the "mystery meat" of USB ports. Gotta love when cheap Amazon parts throw a tantrum after a week.
