I always thought acrylic side panels were a compromise, but after hitting 200 laser cuts on a single sheet last month I changed my tune
The precision and clarity I got from that $12 piece of acrylic after dialing in my machine settings ended up looking cleaner than any tempered glass setup I have seen, has anyone else had a project where a budget material surprised you?

Funny how the cheap stuff forces you to actually learn your machine. Tempered glass looks good out of the box but it hides a lot of mistakes if you're not setting things up right. That $12 sheet probably saved you a bunch of time in the long run, no endless returns for slightly scratched glass. Plus you can mess around with different finishes on acrylic, try a frosted look or polish the edges for that extra clean feel. Glass gives you one look, acrylic gives you dozens.

You ever notice how the stuff that makes you work a little harder almost always teaches you more? Its like when I learned to bake bread from scratch instead of using a bread machine. That first few tries came out like bricks, but once I got the feel for the dough and the oven, the loaves were way better than anything a machine could pump out. Same thing with that acrylic sheet. It forces you to dial in your settings and understand your machine's quirks, and that knowledge carries over to every other material you try. Sometimes the cheap option is just a better teacher.
