Cheap laptop cooler pad vs. just propping it up on bottle caps - 3 month test

So back in September I tried two things on my old gaming laptop. First I used a cheap $15 cooler pad with fans for a month, then I just propped the back up on two bottle caps for a month. The cooler pad only dropped temps by about 3-4C but the bottle caps did the same thing for free. Now I'm wondering if those expensive pads with foam seals and giant fans are actually worth it or if any airflow under the laptop does the trick. Anyone else run a test like this and find a winner?

I actually had the opposite experience with my old MSI laptop. The $30 cooler master pad with the foam seal dropped temps by like 8 degrees under load compared to just propping it up. The seal was the key for me.
