The one critique that fixed my crooked shelves

My neighbor saw me struggling with a shelf in my garage last year. He just said "your level is lying to you." Turns out I was holding it at arm's length instead of pressing it flat against the board. Fixed that one thing and now every shelf I hang comes out straight. Anyone else had a simple tip like that change their whole approach?

Nah, pressing it flat just means you're leveling the dust, not the wood.
