The day I tried to save $200 on a tile saw and learned my lesson
Last Saturday I decided I was gonna cut all the subway tile for my backsplash with a manual snap cutter instead of renting a wet saw. I watched like five YouTube videos that made it look easy, figured I'd save the rental fee. After about three hours and fourteen broken tiles I finally gave up and drove to Home Depot to rent the saw anyway. The thing is I spent $45 on the rental plus another $30 replacing the tiles I cracked. So I basically paid $75 to learn a lesson I could have learned for free by just asking the guy at the tile store. Has anyone else tried to skip the right tool for a job and ended up paying more in the long run?

Man is that the truth, I tried to patch a hole in my drywall with spackle instead of buying a real drywall patch kit. Spent two hours layering that crap on only for it to crumble off the next day, then had to cut out a bigger square and do it right anyway. The $10 I saved turned into like $25 in extra spackle plus the patch kit I shoulda bought first. YouTube makes everything look way easier than it actually is.

Ever notice how YouTube tutorials always skip the part where you're standing in the hardware aisle at 10 PM holding a crumpled receipt and wondering how you messed up drywall repair? That's the real tutorial. I've been there with spackle on a quarter-sized hole, just piling it on like frosting a cake. By the third coat I knew I was in too deep but my pride wouldn't let me stop. Ended up cutting out a square the size of my fist and buying the mesh patch kit anyway. Spackle is great for nail pops and tiny dings but it's not magic. YouTube makes it look like you can just smear stuff on and walk away. Nope. Gravity always wins.
