Replaced my old 1970s rotary phone with a digital one and the call quality change blew my mind
After swapping out that heavy Bakelite relic for a modern $20 cordless, I noticed calls sounded crystal clear instead of that muffled underwater noise, and the static just vanished overnight, has anyone else noticed how much better phone tech has gotten or am I late to the party?

And that staticky hum, right? I remember picking up my grandma's old rotary and feeling like I was listening through a tin can. Now I can hear someone chewing gum from three blocks away. Crazy how we just accepted that muffled sound for decades.

That staticky hum really was just part of the deal back then, like you said. If you want to keep that old rotary as more than a decoration, you can get a small in-line amplifier for under twenty bucks that boosts the volume and cuts some of that background noise. Makes it usable for short calls without losing the nostalgic feel of dialing.

Pfft, I was honestly one of those people who said "the old stuff was built better" and swore by my grandma's rotary phone until about two years ago. But then I borrowed a friend's cheap digital set and couldn't believe the difference. @charlesj46 has it right about that tin can sound - I thought that was just how phones were supposed to work, like background noise was part of the charm. Now I can't even stand to pick up my old one without feeling like I'm missing half the conversation. It's weird how quickly you get used to clarity once you hear it, and now the rotary feels more like a decoration than a phone.
