My dad's old tape measure trick finally made sense after ten years

I was helping my neighbor frame a shed wall in Phoenix last month, and I kept cutting boards a quarter inch short. He asked if I was hooking the tape on the end and pulling it tight. I always just lined up the metal tab at the end, which I guess gets loose over time. My dad tried to show me that when I was a kid, but I never listened. How many other basic things have I been doing wrong without knowing?

Wait, doesn't that tab have play in it on purpose?

My kid's learning app does this exact thing, a progress bar that looks like a play button. It's not just tabs, it's everywhere now. Designers are making things look interactive on purpose to trick you into clicking. I see it on websites, in ads, even on my smart TV menu. It feels like they're just trying to boost engagement numbers no matter how annoying it gets.
