Pro tip: Using paint.net layers to add a minimap to old games
I was messing with Heroes of Might and Magic 3 again last month and got tired of squinting at the tiny minimap. My buddy said to try paint.net (free btw) and just overlay a transparent png on the screen. I made a simple border and a see through grid in like 20 minutes. Now I can track enemy movement way easier without modding any game files. Anyone else do simple image edits like this for older titles?

I mean, I kinda feel like that ruins the original look of the game though.

Oh come on, people say this all the time but it's not even the original look. The original release had way more compression artifacts and lower res textures than what mods clean up. You're looking at a version of the game that's already been patched and polished by the devs themselves through updates. Mods just take it the extra step.
