Tried painting my living room without tape and it was a full on mess

Honestly I thought I was being clever and saving time by freehanding the edges with a angled brush. Big mistake. I ended up with paint all over the ceiling and trim in like three different spots. My wife walked in and just laughed for a solid two minutes before handing me the Frog Tape. Now I tape everything even if it adds an extra 30 minutes. Has anyone else tried skipping prep work and instantly regretted it?

That bit about "way more patience than I had the first time" really hit home. My first attempt at cutting in without tape was in my bedroom and I swear I spent two hours sweating over a single wall before giving up and just taping the whole room anyway. Ended up way more paint on me than the ceiling. I figure that's just the universal painter's rite of passage. You gotta mess up at least once before you learn your lesson. Have you ever tried the trick where you run a thin bead of caulk along the tape edge to prevent bleeding?

oh man I feel this so hard... I tried the same thing with my bathroom and ended up with blue paint all over the white ceiling. What finally worked for me was buying a good quality angled brush and actually taking the time to watch a few youtube tutorials on cutting in. Turns out you gotta load the brush right and kind of wiggle it along the edge instead of just dragging it. Now I still use tape for really tricky spots but for straight lines I can get it clean most of the time with just the brush and a steady hand. Just takes practice and way more patience than I had the first time lol.
